Head Brewer: Jeff Guidos since May 2001
Mike Escourt was the first head brewer and developed the styles of beer on tap.
There are several Red Star bars around Pittsburgh but I do not know if they have a relation to the brewery. I think not.
Synopsis
The brewery is located in a most elegantly restored train station. I say
elegantly because it does not have train parts nailed to the walls. It pays
tribute to a part of America’s golden age of train travel by simply being
classically beautiful. The beers as well as the food are wonderful and full of
flavor.

Happy

Mug
Club
Membership is $35 a person with a limit of 250 people. Ask your server about
this. It’s not your ordinary club. Well worth it. As of 2003 I do not know if
this has changed.
Holiday
Closing
I am told they are closed on most major holidays. They are open on Good Friday.
Beer,
Wines & Spirits
Ten taps greet you when you enter the brewery. Your taste buds will be
pleased to be introduced to a sexy Blond ale, a nice English Pale ale (no sex
please, it’s British), a nutty Brown ale and the Iron Horse Stout. The Stout
took a silver medal at the 1999 Great American Beer Festival in Denver. The taps
will also have seasonal beers. Look for an Oktoberfest, Wheat and a Dunkle
Weiss. A beer engine is in the works.
Food
A very good selection.
Entertainment
Live entertainment on Wednesday and Saturday. They may charge a cover some
times.
Cigar
Smoking
Cigars are permitted at the bar. They do sell some from a humidor that may be
under the bar at times. Ask if you don’t see them.
Cash
Problem?
I have not located an ATM but the bar staff should be able to help.
Directions
Coming in from Pittsburgh on Route 30 East get off the Pittsburgh Street
exit. Pittsburgh Street is one way. Stay in the left lane until the Court
House. Take the left turn lane and go to the next corner. Turn left on to
Oberman. Turn right on to Harrison Ave. You will see the sign on the pole for
the train station. Look up and see the station.
Leaving the station turn right from the free lot and go to the corner. This is College St. Turn left and go to the next corner and turn right. This is Oberman and it will put you back on Route 30 West to Pittsburgh.
Traveling
by Train
Yes it can be done but use caution due to the scheduling. I don’t recommend
the train at this time. Amtrak has two trains stopping here, the Three Rivers
and the Capitol Limited. Pittsburgher’s can catch them at Penn Station on
Liberty Avenue. The Greensburg station does not have a ticket booth so get a
round trip ticket in Pittsburgh. Go to AMTRAK at
www.amtrack.com
Parking
When coming in on Harrison the parking on the right is for the train station and
is a metered lot. The parking lot on the left is for the brewery and is free.
